A hub for flights and data

A hub for flights and data at Hannover Airport Passenger boarding bridge at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport Hannover Airport Terminal Flughafen Hannover, Hannover Airport Terminal

FME acts as the central data hub at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport.

Hanover Airport is the largest airport and the only international air freight hub in the state of Lower Saxony. The team of experts from axmann geoinformation supported the customer in preparing data and migrating it to a new IT system.

This involved CAD plans whose visualisation could not be lost, which had to be continuously processed and made available for the information system. The diverse plans include fire alarm technology, supply and disposal systems and even the outdoor facilities throughout the airport, including the apron and the runways. In addition, all rooms in the buildings and their letting are documented.

Requirements for the system

The previous system was replaced by a modern solution consisting of the rmDATA products Inventory Manager and GeoWeb. The decisive factor in the airport's decision was that CAD plans can be displayed in their original form in rmDATA WebGIS. This means that existing plans were not migrated to the new system and new plans should be easy to replace in the FM system.

Graduate geographer Elke Kühne, who is responsible for data management in the company, emphasises: ‘This solution is the only system that met our extensive catalogue of requirements. It maps all technical trades in our facility management (FM) of the airport in one platform.’

FME workflows

The central element of the comprehensive solution for the airport is therefore the preparation and publication of the CAD plans.

axmann employees used FME to create a number of workflows to transfer data to the new system or export it for other applications. The products FME Form was used to create and maintain the transformation models and FME Flow to automate these models and to expand and monitor the processes.

Regular publication

The automated process with the help of FME has resulted in significant savings. According to Elke Kühne: ‘There are tens of thousands of AutoCAD plans for around 200 buildings and thousands of rooms.’ Manual and time-consuming publication is no longer necessary.

This enormous amount of data is updated in the GIS every night. At the same time, the system automatically corrects the CAD data, displays it correctly and makes it available to over 600 users.

Comprehensive solution

Other workflows, such as TENADO fire brigade route maps (floor plan information of individual buildings is prepared for fire scenarios for efficient firefighting) or ARIGON (a central security system that is supplied with point-based information such as fire detectors etc. via FME), could also be integrated into the comprehensive airport solution.

In the future, further trades will be incorporated into the new system and the necessary data will be prepared and made available with the support of FME.

Elke Kühne from Hannover Airpoirt is convinced:

‘The FME solution together with axmann services was the right decision for our requirements. We can count on one contact person who takes care of everything and bundles all enquiries, regardless of whether they relate to software or data issues.’
