Optimisation of air traffic information management with FME and FME Server
Optimisation of air traffic information management at Austro Control with the help of FME Form and FME Flow.
Austro Control, Austria's national air traffic control service provider, has set itself the task of managing air traffic-specific data and information more efficiently and digitally. As the volume of data is constantly growing and national and international regulations are becoming ever more extensive, innovative ways of optimising processes in aeronautical information management (AIM) were sought. FME Form and FME Flow are an essential component of modernisation, as they lead to increased performance in the area of data management and data analysis.
The challenges
The biggest challenge is to manage a wide variety of data sets from different sources with different quality characteristics automatically and in compliance with international aviation standards. Manual data management and the publication of the information derived from it were time-consuming, involved media disruptions and made collaboration with data suppliers and data customers more difficult. For example, it had to be ensured that the requirements of the INSPIRE EU regulation could be met.
The solution
Austro Control opted for FME Form and FME Flow as well as axmann geoinformation's expertise in data management to digitalise and automate its data management. These tools provided the right solutions for data integration, data transformation and data distribution, which led to the modernisation of AIM processes and efficient use of data.
The implementation of FME Form and FME Flow within Austro Control was realised by in-house experts and their resources.
DI Robert Wehofer, Manager Static Data Management:
‘Essential AIM processes were jointly identified in order to design and further develop data transformation workflows according to the respective requirements. Even without programming knowledge, a large team was able to develop solutions together.’
The integration of a wide variety of data formats is automated primarily through the use of FME's extensive transformation tools. In addition to pure data integration, this also includes validating data integrity, performing quality checks and implementing business rules to ensure accurate and compliant information.
The advantages
The integration of FME within AIM brought the following benefits for the company:
- Increased efficiency through automation of previously manual tasks.
- Increased data quality through comprehensive data validation.
- Facilitated team collaboration and accelerated the provision of information through centralised data management.
- Interoperability through simplified compliance with standards and simplified data exchange with aviation stakeholders.
- Automated digital publication of map material
- Support for analytical project work within Austro Control with the help of FME Form and FME Flow, e.g: Noise analyses, radar coverage, weather data.
